Jacques Étienne Victor Arago (born March 10, 1790 in Estagel , Département Pyrénées-Orientales , † November 27, 1854 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a French writer .

biography

Arago was a son of Bonaventure Arago and his wife. His father was the director of the mint of Perpignan ; his brothers were Étienne , François and Jean .

As a draftsman, Arago took part in an expedition under the direction of Louis de Freycinet . Between 1817 and 1820 they sailed around the world with the ships “Uranie” and “Physicienne”. After his return to France, Arago settled in Bordeaux as a freelance writer . He wrote poems and novels; but also some plays (mostly vaudevilles ) for the theater. From 1829 to 1835 he lived in Toulouse , in addition to his writing duties, he also acted as the editor of several literary magazines.

In 1835, Arago took over the management of the Rouen Municipal Theater . He had to resign from this office two years later due to illness (blindness). In 1849, despite his blindness , he headed a group of speculators and adventurers to California to make their fortune in the local gold rush .

While staying in the port of Valparaíso ( Chile ), Arago was abandoned by his companions and returned to France in the spring of 1850. He later published his experiences and disappointments of this adventure under the title Une vie agitée . Despite all this, Arago soon made a new trip to Brazil, where he died in November 1854.
