Jacques Auxiette (born December 3, 1940 in Monlevicq , Département Indre ) is a French politician and member of the Socialist Party (PS) . Since 2004 he has been elected President of the Pays de la Loire region for seven years .

education and profession

He began his training in Montluçon ( Département Allier ). He then graduated from the University of Clermont-Ferrand in the scientific branch and graduated with a diploma in mathematics. From 1964 to 1969 he did his military service in Tunisia before becoming a teacher of mathematics at the Lycée Pierre-Mendès-France from 1970. From 1983 to 1998 he was headmaster at a public high school. Jacques Auxiette is a widower and has two children.

Political career

His political career began at the end of the 1960s with active work in the oldest and largest French student association Union nationale des étudiants de France (UNEF), since 1973 he has been a member of the Socialist Party and in the same year became its general secretary in La Roche. sur-yon . From 1986 to 1990 he was then also general secretary of the state party.

In 1977 he successfully ran for mayor of La Roche-sur-Yon and held this office for 27 years, in 1979 he was also Chancellor of the canton of La Roche-sur-Yon-Nord, which was divided into two halves in 1973, for four years . In 1986 he was confirmed in this office, which he still holds. Since 1994 he has also been Vice President of the inter-municipal association "Communauté des communes du Pays Yonnais" and has already been re-elected several times.

Since 1984 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of French Mayors and also a member of the Association of French Medium-Sized Cities. From 1983 to 1987 he was chairman of the National School Inspectorate (ENA) and of the Conseil Supérieur de la Fonction Publique Territoriale (CSFPT) and, following French tradition, he remained closely associated with the public service.

In 1989 Auxiette also became President of the "Groupement des Autorités Responsables de Transport" (GART), founded in 1980, an association of 263 organizational units in the transport sector. This includes 185 conurbations and urban agglomerations, 59  départements and 19 regions . Jacques Auxiette is considered to be a modernizer of local public transport and has played a decisive role in the efforts to decentralize the Transport express régional (TER). He is chairman of the transport commission in the Conseil des communes et régions d'Europe (CCRE) .

Jacques Auxiette sees further important international tasks in decentralization, sustainable development, peace and the promotion of international partnerships. He was a member of the French delegation of the "Fédération Mondiale des Cités Unies" (FMCU) at the global conference in Johannesburg , South Africa. He is also a member of the "Association française du conseil des communes et régions d'Europe" (AFCCRE) and a founding member of the newly founded "Cities & Local Government United".
