Jacques Ibert

Jacques François Antoine Ibert (born August 15, 1890 in Paris ; † February 5, 1962 there ) was a French composer .

Life

From 1910 to 1914 he studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Gabriel Fauré , Émile Pessard , Paul Vidal and André Gedalge, among others . During his studies he worked as a piano improviser in silent film productions. In 1919 he was awarded the coveted Prix ​​de Rome ( Rome Prize ). Before and after the Second World War he was director of the French Academy in Rome . In Paris in the early 1930s he met regularly with fellow composers Barraine , Honegger , Messiaen and Milhaud in the salon of the Dutch composer Rosy Wertheim. In 1955 he was the administrative director of both Paris opera houses. From 1956 Ibert was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts as the successor to Joseph Guy Ropartz .
