Jadranka Kosor [ ˈjadraːnka ˈkɔsɔr ] (born July 1, 1953 in Pakrac ) is a Croatian politician and journalist . On July 3, 2009 she was commissioned by President Stjepan Mesić to form a new government in her home country after Prime Minister Ivo Sanader announced his resignation on July 1, 2009. From July 6, 2009 to December 23, 2011 she was Prime Minister of Croatia .

biography

Kosor graduated from the University of Zagreb with a degree in law . From 1972 she worked as a journalist for Večernji list and Radio Zagreb . She was a member of the Croatian National Association of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia . During the Croatian War 1991–1995 she worked as a radio reporter. In her broadcast she addressed war topics such as the refugee problem and the trauma of injured war returnees.

In 1995 Kosor became a member of the Croatian Parliament for the conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). From 1995 to 2000 she was Vice President of Parliament, from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2009 she was Deputy Chairwoman of the HDZ.

After his election victory in 2003, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader brought Kosor into his cabinet as Minister for Family, War Veterans and Solidarity between the Generations.

The HDZ nominated her as a candidate for the 2005 presidential election. In the first round she was after counting the votes just ahead of Boris Mikšić in second place. In the runoff election on January 16, 2005, she was then clearly defeated by incumbent Stjepan Mesić .

After the surprising resignation of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader during the current legislative period, she was tasked with forming a new government on July 3, 2009. On July 4, 2009, she was elected chairwoman almost unanimously at her party's regular convention. Two days later, on July 6, 2009, Kosor was elected Croatia's new Prime Minister with 83 votes out of 153. This made her the first female head of government in Croatia since gaining independence. In her government statement she announced that she wanted to take action against corruption and promote Croatia's desired membership in the European Union .

After the HDZ's election defeat in December 2011, Zoran Milanović (SDP) was her successor in the office of Prime Minister.

After Kosor had criticized the shift to the right of their party in an interview that it was from the HDZ on March 1, 2013 excluded .
