Jakob Erlandsen (* in the 12th or 13th century; † February 18, 1274 on Rügen ) was Archbishop of Lund . His parents were called Erland and Caecilie (daughter of Sune Ebbesen).

Live and act

As provost in Lund, he took part in the first council in Lyons as advocate for Erik Plogpenning in 1245 . But he voted against the king's wish for Niels Stigsen as Bishop of Roskilde. As a result, his church income and inheritance were confiscated. Later there was a comparison with the king. In 1250 he was appointed Bishop of Roskilde . At the instigation of the Pope he got his property back and Copenhagen as well. Copenhagen received its first city charter from him in 1254 . In the same year he became archbishop of Lund. He set up schools in Roskilde and Lund. He got into a serious conflict with King Christoffer because he represented the absolute primacy of the church over all secular law.

At the Synod of Vejle in 1256 it was decided that any violence against a bishop or the imprisonment of a bishop would lead to an interdict .

In the conflict with the king he was denied all privileges. He refused to crown the son of King Erik as heir to the throne and allied himself with the king's enemies so that he was imprisoned in 1259. After the death of King Christoffers, who died in the same year, he was released by the queen widow Margarete Sambiria . He continued his resistance against the royal family, but mostly stayed in neighboring countries.

In 1272 he presented his case to the Pope in Rome , where he was asked to settle.

When he returned from Rome, he was murdered in Rügen in 1274 with a shot from a crossbow, as a recent examination of the body has shown.

Erlandsen was buried in the Franciscan church in Lund. He was the brother of Erland († 1276) and Niels Erlandsen (Stadthater von Skaane).
