Jakob Johnson (born December 15, 1994 in Stuttgart ) is a German American football player on the position of fullback for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers and signed on as an Undrafted Free Agent with the Patriots through the International Player Pathway program .

Early years

Johnson played for the Stuttgart Scorpions for the U19s in the German Football League before going to Jean Ribault High School in Jacksonville (Florida). From there he moved to the University of Tennessee and played in the university's football team, the Tennessee Volunteers , on the position of linebacker . In 2018, he left university and was also unable to enroll in the NFL Draft due to a serious injury . He then returned to Stuttgart.

NFL

In 2019, he was able to assert himself through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, which aims to promote football players who were not born in the USA . He then signed a contract with the New England Patriots as an Undrafted Free Agent, where he initially took a place in the Practice Squad .

On September 21, he moved to the active squad after an injury to his teammate James Develin and made his first NFL game on September 22, 2019 against the New York Jets . This commitment made him the first player in the International Player Pathway program to complete an NFL game in the regular season . In the following three NFL games, Johnson was set as a starter. In the game against the Washington Redskins , he caught his first NFL pass for 5 yards of space. In the game against the New York Giants he injured his shoulder, whereupon the New England Patriots put him on the Injured Reserve List and the season ended prematurely for him.
