James Rizzi
James Rizzi (born October 5, 1950 in New York City , † December 26, 2011 there ) was an American artist and painter . It is assigned to Pop Art .
Life
James Rizzi was born to a mother of Irish descent and an Italian father and grew up as one of three children on East 8th Street in Brooklyn, New York . Rizzi graduated from Holy Innocents Grammar School, Brooklyn, and then attended Erasmus High School, also in Brooklyn. From 1969 he studied art at the University of Florida in Gainesville . Already during his studies he dealt with the combination of painting and sculpture and finally developed the technique of 3D graphics that he frequently used . After completing his studies in 1974, he had the first opportunity to present his work to the public in New York's Brooklyn Museum .
With increasing popularity, galleries and museums began to be interested in his works, but Rizzi also found a wide field of activity in addition to painting, where he produced, among other things, records / CD covers, animation music videos and a wide variety of everyday objects, from telephone cards to Rosenthal - Porcelain, crafted. Numerous solo exhibitions and awards were the result, James Rizzi was one of the most popular contemporary artists of Pop Art during his lifetime .
Rizzi has been involved several times in cooperation with German organizations for charitable purposes. For example, in a collaboration with the “ Lions Club Krefeld Rheintor”, the proceeds from a complete limited and signed edition of the lithograph “Gone With The Wind” went to the victims of the hurricane catastrophe in New Orleans . Rizzi sponsored a school project for the Lakota Indian tribe in the US state of South Dakota for Peter Maffay's “Encounters” project for the benefit of children in need under the patronage of German Chancellor Angela Merkel .
Rizzi died on the night of December 26, 2011 in his studio in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan in New York .
style
Rizzi's works often focus on his hometown New York and its residents. The pictures are mostly of an almost childlike-naive simplicity and in very bright colors and radiate happiness, urban joie de vivre and optimism , which earned him the name "Urban Primitive Artist" from the art press.
In the three-dimensional construction technique that is characteristic of him , the image elements in the foreground are cut out from a duplicate of the image, which serves as the background, and placed in a second image plane using bridges made of foam or similar materials. This causes the observer, also through the shadows that are created, a 3D effect created by the two planes.
