James Vibert (born August 15, 1872 in Carouge , † May 2, 1942 in Plan-les-Ouates ) was a Swiss sculptor .

Life

James Vibert, a brother of Pierre-Eugène Vibert , learned the trade of belt maker in the French city of Lyon . He then moved to Paris in 1891 . There he joined Auguste Rodin , who introduced him to the symbolism of the visual arts .

When Vibert returned to Switzerland in 1903, he was appointed professor at the Geneva École des Beaux-Arts ; he held this position until 1935. From 1906 to 1908 and from 1923 to 1926 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission . On the occasion of the first international art exhibition on July 20, 1909, Vibert was able to exhibit his works together with Max Buri , Rodo von Niederhäusern , Cuno Amiet , Albert Trachsel and Ferdinand Hodler .

In 1914, after a first draft had been rejected, Vibert was allowed to erect the group of sculptures, the three confederates, in the domed hall of the Federal Palace. For three years he had carved this out of Botticino lime in his studio in Carrara . Vibert created the sculpture group Past and Future for the Musée Rath .

James Vibert was portrayed twice by Ferdinand Hodler, the first time in 1907 and the second time in 1915. Vibert was a member of the Geneva Masonic lodge “Fidélité et Prudence”.
