Jan Egil Storholt (born February 13, 1949 in Meldal ) is a former Norwegian speed skater .

Career

Storholt was considered one of Norway's greatest talents in speed skating until he was seriously injured in an accident in a mine in 1970 . In 1972 he had re-established himself in the national top. After some of the best Norwegian runners switched to the professional camp in 1973 and were therefore no longer allowed to participate in the Olympic Games , Storholt advanced to become one of the best Norwegian amateurs.

His greatest sporting success was winning the gold medal over 1,500 m at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . In 1977 and 1979 he was European champion in four-way combat. In the years 1977 to 1979 he was runner-up in the four-way world champion and only had to admit defeat to the then exceptional athlete Eric Heiden . On March 20, 1977 he set the only world records of his career on the Medeo high mountain railway in Alma-Ata ( Soviet Union , today Kazakhstan ) over 1,500 m and in the four-way battle.

In 1980 he was the flag bearer of the Norwegian team at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Lake Placid . However , he was denied winning another Olympic medal . His last great sporting success was a third place in the four-way fight at the speed skating world championships in Oslo in 1981 .
