career path

In parallel to competitive sport, Jan Fitschen completed a degree in physics at the Ruhr University in Bochum , which he graduated with a diploma in 2008, and then an economics degree, from which he obtained his master’s degree in 2010. Fitschen is head coach at the Nike + Run Club (NRC). He also gives lectures and seminars on running in theory and practice and sometimes describes himself as a “professional runner”.

In September 2015 Fitschen had the book Wunderläuferland Kenya. The secrets of the world's most successful long-distance runners published.

Athletic career

Fitschen began his athletics career in Osnabrück , where he grew up.

First Fitschen was successful in the 1500 meter run . In 1996 he became German Vice Youth Champion . In 1997 and 1998 he won bronze at the German Junior Championships .

In 1999 Fitschen became German Vice- Junior Champion and German Junior Champion in cross-country skiing . At the U23 European Championships , a fifth place over 1500 meters attracted attention. Over this distance he had won bronze in the adult class in the hall and had become runner-up in the free field. The following year he became German cross-country champion on the middle distance .

In 2001 Fitschen was German runner-up over 3000 meters behind Dieter Baumann at the German Indoor Championships . Despite the ban, Baumann had obtained his right to start in court, but this was not recognized by the International Athletics Federation IAAF . All athletes in the 3000 meter final were suspended, which meant that Fitschen could not take part in the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon.

In 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006 Fitschen was German champion over 5000 meters , as well as over 10,000 meters in 2005, 2006 and 2007. In the hall he was German champion seven times in a row (2002 to 2008) over 3000 meters.

In 2002 Fitschen won the cross country championship with the team , to which he contributed with a place in the individual. With the team he came in 3rd place at the European Cup .

In 2003 Fitschen became student world champion over 10,000 meters and student vice world champion over 5000 meters at the Universiade in Daegu (South Korea). At the Indoor European Cup , he finished 2nd with the team.

In 2005 Fitschen was German road running champion and came third with the team at the European Cup .

His greatest success up to that point was winning the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg over 10,000 meters in a personal best of 28: 10.94 minutes. Fitschen's sensational success was boosted by a tactical race that he won in the final sprint as a former middle-distance runner . He became only the third German European champion over this distance after Jürgen Haase and Manfred Kuschmann .

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he started over 5000 meters and was eliminated in the semi-finals. Due to an injury, Fitschen had to refrain from participating in both the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

At the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona Fitschen finished twelfth as defending champion over the 10,000 meter course. In the same year he became German champion in the 10 km road race for the second time . Then he switched completely to the street. In the half marathon competition at the Cologne Marathon in October, he finished third in 1:05:19 h.

In April 2011 Fitschen won the 25-kilometer run in Herne in 1:16:56 h ahead of the Tanzanian Ezekiel Jafari . The following month he made his marathon debut at the Düsseldorf Marathon and finished eighth in 2:20:15.

In June 2012 Fitschen won the Stuttgart run in 1:06:55 h on the half marathon course. At the Berlin marathon in autumn he ran in 14th place and was the fastest European participant in 2:13:10 h.

In 2013 Fitschen became the German half marathon champion with a new personal best . In October 2013 Fitschen had a heel operation and had to interrupt his competitive sports career. Therefore, he could not qualify for the 2014 European Championships in Zurich.

Fitschen ended his competitive sports career in October 2015.
