Life

After attending school, Kalvoda began studying law at Charles University , graduating in 1978 with a master's degree. He then worked as a lawyer in Rokycany and, after the Velvet Revolution of 1989, became a member of the Pilsen Bar Association and co-organizer of the OF Citizens' Forum ( Občanské fórum ) in Rokycany. On February 6, 1990 he became a member of the Czech National Council , in which he first represented the Citizens 'Forum and then between 1991 and June 4, 1992 the Democratic Citizens' Alliance ODA ( Občanská democická aliance ) . During this period he briefly chaired the Standing Committee on Security Policy in 1990 and then between 1990 and 1991 Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. In 1992 he replaced Pavel Bratinka as chairman of the ODA and held this position until he was replaced by Michael Žantovský in 1997. At the same time, he was chairman of the ODA in the Prague capital region and in 1992 was deputy chairman of the government commission for the preparation of the Czech constitution.

Thereafter, Kalvoda was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic between 1992 and 1996 . He was Deputy Prime Minister in the first and second government of Prime Minister Václav Klaus from July 2, 1992 to January 7, 1997. At the same time he held the post of Minister of Justice from July 4, 1996 to January 7, 1997. On December 17, 1996, he resigned from his parliamentary mandate and his ministerial offices because of the unauthorized use of a doctor of rights, but still held the ministerial offices formally until the appointment of the successor Jiří Skalický as Deputy Prime Minister and Vlasta Parkanová as Minister of Justice on January 7, 1997 .

After leaving the government and parliament, Kalvoda resumed his practice as a lawyer and turned down offers to take up political mandates. In 2009 he was the legal representative of the MP Miloš Melčak in his constitutional complaint before the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic against an early election of the Chamber of Deputies planned for 2009.
