Jan Richard de Brueys also: Janus Richardus de Brueys (born June 6, 1778 in The Hague , † February 4, 1848 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Jan Richard was the son of the council at the court of Utrecht, as well as a member of the high council of The Hague Benjamin de Brueys (* May 6, 1742 in The Hague; † August 22, 1826 ibid) and his first wife Cecilia Elisabeth van Beusekom (* February 19, 1753 in The Hague; † November 3, 1786 ibid). After attending grammar school in 's-Hertogenbosch , he enrolled on May 6, 1796 as a student of literature and mathematics at the University of Utrecht . Enthusiastic about Cornelis Willem de Rhoer's lectures on natural, peoples and criminal law, he turned to studying law. He continued this study until he received his doctorate in law on December 16, 1801 with the work De Usu, quem pro singulari populorum conditione, in regendis civium actionibus habere possunt poenae opinionis seu infamantes .

After working as a lawyer for two years, he became a professor at the Atheneum in Deventer on June 28, 1803 and began this task with the speech Pro iurisprudentia Romana, etiam post pereuntia ceterarum artium ac doctrinarum studia pristinum decus diu tuente . In 1806 he received an appointment as professor of nature, international and constitutional law at the University of Harderwijk , which he refused.
