Jan Suchý (born October 10, 1944 in Deutschbrod , Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player . For many years he was one of the best defenders in the first division of Czechoslovakia and also dominated international championships.

Career as a player

Jan Suchý learned to play with puck and bat on a frozen pond near his hometown. There he played together with befriended Holík brothers Jiří and Jaroslav . At the age of seven they were trained by Jaroslav Holík senior in the Kotlina ice rink . From the following year, the trio played for the local ice hockey club, Jiskra Havlíčkův Brod . Suchý went through all of the club's junior teams and only left when he had to do his military service in 1963. From then on he played for the army club Dukla Jihlava , with whom he won seven Czechoslovak championships and twice the most important award for players in the Czechoslovakia, the Zlatá hokejka . A total of Suchý completed 16 seasons in the top division of the ČSSR, in which he scored 162 goals, prepared a further 221 goals and in 562 games stepped on the ice (with 351 penalty minutes). He holds the goal record for defenders of the Czechoslovak extra league. After his success with Dukla Jihlava, Suchý was allowed to play in other Western European countries. Between 1979 and 1981 he was under contract with WAT Stadlau in Vienna , followed by one season each with ESV Kaufbeuren (1981/82), EV Landsberg (1982/83) and UEC Mödling (1983/84), where he started his career finished at the age of 40.

Jan Suchý, also known as the "European Bobby Orr ", had great successes in international championships. With the Czechoslovak men's selection , he won two medals at the Olympic Winter Games and six medals at world championships . He received his first appointment to the national team for the ice hockey world championship in 1965 (winning the bronze medal) and from then on he participated annually in the world championship. Three years later he was appointed to the roster for the 1968 Winter Olympics and won the silver medal. After a car accident caused by him under the influence of alcohol in 1971, Suchý served a sentence of 18 months in prison and was expelled from the national team, so that he could not experience winning the world title in 1972. In the national jersey, he scored 44 goals in 160 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

In 2009 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
