Jan van Geen

Jan van Geen ( February 12, 1923 - September 18, 1980 ) was a Dutch football player .

Career

Van Geen, mostly used as a center forward , came from the Nederlandse Arbeiders Sportbond to HVV Cromvliet in The Hague, with whom he was champion in the third division in 1947. In 1948 he moved to SVV Scheveningen, where he was active for two years. Together with his compatriot Antoine Baumann , he went in 1950 as a professional football player for FC Nantes in Division 2 , the second French league, where he played from 1950 to 1955, among others with Gerrit Vreeken . A subsidy from the city enabled the club, founded in 1943, to buy the Dutchman's first “star”.

In March 1953 he was one of the Dutch professionals active abroad who fought the Watersnoodwedstrijd in Paris , a benefit game against the French national team for the benefit of the victims of the Dutch storm flood . After professional football found its way into the Netherlands as a result of this game, van Geen went back home, where he played with Jan Everse , Bertus de Harder and Mick Clavan at Holland Sport . The team was 1958 champions of the Eerste divisie B , in the decisive game against de Volewijckers van Geen marked the fourth goal. In 1960 he ended his professional career, but played another three years as an amateur with VV ADS from the Hague district of Kraayenstein. He remained loyal to this club as a coach until 1971.

In 1977 van Geen was diagnosed with cancer. He succumbed to the disease just three years later.
