Jane Powell (born April 1, 1929 as Suzanne Lorraine Burce in Portland , Oregon , † September 16, 2021 in Wilton , Connecticut ) was an American actress and singer . It was mainly through their performances in Hollywood - musicals known.

life and career

As a young girl, Jane Powell performed as a singer and dancer. Her parents wanted her to be a second Shirley Temple . She received singing lessons in Oakland , California .

Before she signed a deal with MGM in 1943 , she appeared in two United Artists films . For MGM, she changed her name to Jane Powell, the name of the character she played in Song of the Open Road . Her first engagement for MGM, the musical ball in the embassy , made her a star. Her good singing voice, her talent for dancing and her acting skills made her one of the most popular musical stars in Hollywood's golden era . Most of all, she was cast in the role of the All-American Girl .

Among her most successful films include directed by Stanley Donen incurred Royal Wedding (1951), in which she as a sister of Fred Astaire occurs figure, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954). At the gala for US President Harry S. Truman's inauguration for his second term on January 19, 1949, she sang Love Is Where You Find It and Buttons and Bows .

In addition to her film career, she also recorded records in the 1950s, for example the LP Can't we be Friends in 1956 , in which she does not use her well-known soprano voice , but sings deeper. When Hollywood musicals fell in the audience's favor from the mid-1950s, fewer cinema roles were offered. Attempts to find a place in other genres were unsuccessful - in 1958, for example, she took on a leading role in the rather unfamiliar genre of film noir , in The Female Animal she competes with her mother, played by Hedy Lamarr , for the favor of a man (played by George Nader ).

From the end of the 1950s, she increasingly shifted to work on television and on theatrical stages. Among other things, she played on Broadway and toured across the USA with lavish productions of musicals such as South Pacific , My Fair Lady , The Sound of Music , Carousel , Brigdoon and Oklahoma! . In later decades she appeared in guest roles in the series Fantasy Island , Love Boat and Our Loud Home . She also gave concerts and was heard on the radio.

Powell was married five times, their first four marriages ending in divorce. She was the mother of three children. From 1988 until his death in 2015, Powell was married to former child actor Dickie Moore , whom she fell in love with during an interview for his planned book about child stars. They lived alternately in Manhattan and the small town of Wilton , where Powell died in September 2021 at the age of 92.
