Janning Trumann (born October 30, 1990 ) is a German jazz musician ( trombone , composition , orchestral direction). "With a lean tone, a clever sense of construction and mature timing, he is one of the most remarkable new voices in contemporary improvisation music."

Live and act

Trumann took violin lessons at the age of five. He started playing the trombone when he was ten. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Lower Saxony Wind Machine youth jazz orchestra . He was a soloist in 2006 at Jugend jazzt in Lower Saxony and has played in the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hamburg Jazzessence since 2007 . In the same year he became a young student in jazz with Nils Landgren and Wolf Kerschek at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater , in order to have been studying jazz trombone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance since 2010 . He designed his concert exam in 2014 as a festival.

Trumann is a member of various jazz formations such as the "Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra" and leads another big band, the " Subway Jazz Orchestra ". In 2014 he was part of the “Jazz Baltica Ensemble” during the Jazz Baltica Festival . He has worked with the WDR Big Band Cologne , Peter Herbolzheimer , Dave Douglas , Donny McCaslin , Niels Klein , Vince Mendoza and Peter Erskine . With his double trio Makkro (with Christian Lorenzen, Reza Askari , Oliver Lutz , Fabian Arends and Thomas Sauerborn ) he released his debut album “Raum” in 2013, which was followed by the album “why” in 2016 (Klaeng Records 2016). In 2014 he presented the album “Impulse” with his quartet Truman Doktrin . In a duo with bassist Florian Herzog , Janning Trumann dedicates himself to free improvisation (album "Hermann" on JazzHausMusik ). With Fabian Willmann , Florian Herzog and Eva Klesse he formed the Trillmann quartet , which was formed during a study visit to New York and with which he released the album Foen (Tangible Music) in 2017 ; The EP Live followed in 2019 .

Prizes and awards

Trumann won the JJ Johnson Award from the International Trombone Association in 2016 . In the same year he received the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the music category.
