Jari Kaarlo Torkki (born August 11, 1965 in Rauma ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League and the Starbulls Rosenheim in the German Ice Hockey League from 1981 to 2002 . His younger brother Sami was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Jari Torkki began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Lukko Rauma , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 1981/82 season . In his only mission he remained unpunished and punished. In the following years he became a regular at Lukko, with whom he achieved direct resurgence from the second class I divisioona after relegation in 1983 in the following year. In the 1987/88 season , the winger was runner-up with Lukko behind Tappara Tampere .
Following the Olympic Games in Calgary, Torkki was summoned to North America by the Chicago Blackhawks . This had already selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 1983 in the sixth round as a total of 115 players. In the 1988/89 season , the Finn came to four missions for Chicago in the National Hockey League , in which he scored one goal. However, he spent the entire rest of the season with their farm team , the Saginaw Hawks , in the International Hockey League . In the following season he was only in the IHL on the ice, but this time for the Indianapolis Ice , with which he won the Turner Cup . He contributed to this success with a total of 61 points scorer, including 30 goals, in 77 games.
From 1990 to 1996 Torkki played again for his home club Lukko Rauma in the SM-liiga. He then completed two seasons with the Starbulls Rosenheim in the German Ice Hockey League . After all, the former NHL player let his career end in lower class European leagues and played for HC Meran and HC Milano Vipers in the Italian Serie A from 1998 to 2001 . With Meran he won the Serie A championship title in a thrilling final against HC Bozen in extra time with his goal . After he had started the 2001/02 season in Merano, he finished it with the Bracknell Bees in the British Ice Hockey Superleague . He then ended his career at the age of 36.
International
For Finland , Torkki took part in the junior division at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1982 and 1983 , as well as the U20 Junior World Championships in 1984 and 1985 . At the U18 Junior European Championship in 1983 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 1984, he won the silver medal with his team. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1987 World Cup and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . At the Olympics, where Finland finished second behind the Soviet Union , the winger scored one goal in four games.
