Jasonia bocconei is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The species can only be found in Malta .
description
Jasonia bocconei is a perennial plant of shrubby, slightly gnarled growth and is usually 20 to 30 centimeters high. The entire plant has a strong camphor odor . The stem, like the fleshy leaves, is covered with short hairs and glands. The leaves are oblanceolate and 4 to 10 millimeters wide. The flower heads sit individually at the end of the main stem and on short leafy side branches, so that the overall appearance is umbel-like. The flower heads contain only yellow tubular flowers . The bracts are curved outwards.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
distribution
The species, which is native to Malta and is common there, inhabits garigue and rocky locations.
Systematics and botanical history
The species was first described in 1979 by Salvatore Brullo as Chiliadenus bocconei . It is closely related to Jasonia lopadusanus , an endemic to the neighboring island of Lampedusa . In 2004 both species were added to the genus Jasonia .
use
Until the introduction of the euro, a picture of the plant graced the back of the Maltese 50-cent piece. The plant was occasionally used in folk medicine against diabetes.
