Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant , actually Jean-Joseph Constant , (born June 10, 1845 in Paris ; † May 26, 1902 ibid) was a French painter and graphic artist ( etching ).

Life

Constant - known as Benjamin-Constant - became a half-orphan in 1847. Since his mother had died, he came to Toulouse ( Haute-Garonne ) to live with his aunts. There he became a student of Jules Garipuy at the École des Beaux-Arts . With his support he came back to his hometown in 1866 and was there a. a. Taught by Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts.

Together with his friend and colleague Georges Clairin , Benjamin-Constant went on a study trip through Spain in 1870 . When the situation improved again after the Franco-Prussian War , he undertook - again with Clairin - an extended trip through Morocco .

In 1888 Benjamin-Constant was appointed to succeed the late Gustave Boulanger at the Académie Julian and five years later he was accepted as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts . During these years Benjamin-Constant took part in the major annual exhibitions of the Salon de Paris several times and was also awarded a Medal of Honor in 1896. One of his students was Angèle Delasalle , who portrayed him several times (1901 and 1902).

Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant died 15 days before his 57th birthday on May 26, 1902 in Paris, where he also found his final resting place.

reception

The impressions of his trip to Spain and his role model Eugène Delacroix can be traced back to Benjamin-Constant's early works. But at the latest with his pictures, which were taken during his stay in Morocco or afterwards, Benjamin-Constant is considered an important representative of Orientalism in France.

Independent of this, he soon became a sought-after portraitist . He had also decorated important public spaces several times in collaboration with colleagues.
