Jean Pierre Grallet OFM (born May 20, 1941 in Rozelieures in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department ) is a French religious and retired Roman Catholic Archbishop of Strasbourg .

Life

Jean Pierre Grallet was born the son of a farmer in a small village in Lorraine . He went to school in Épinal and Nancy and began studying Catholic theology and history at the “Grand Séminaire de Nancy”. From 1965 to 1969 he attended the Scolasticat franciscain in Orsay , where he entered the Franciscan order. He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1969 .

He then worked as a school chaplain and religion teacher in Orsay, Phalsbourg and Besançon before he became student pastor in Strasbourg (1985 to 1988) and Metz (1989 to 1996). At the same time he performed various tasks in his order. From 1996 to 2004 he ran a student residence in Strasbourg.

On 27 September 2004 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Dardanus and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Strasbourg . The episcopal ordination donated him the Strasbourg Archbishop Joseph Doré on 23 October of that year. As auxiliary bishop he was responsible for the Colmar region, for diakonia and the pastoral care of prisoners .

After the health-related resignation of his predecessor, he was on April 21, 2007 by Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of Strasbourg and on May 13 of the same year introduced to the office of 105th Shepherd of Strasbourg.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on February 18, 2017.
