Jean-Sébastien Aubin (born July 19, 1977 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Ducs d'Angers in the French Ligue Magnus until summer 2015 .

Career

North America

Jean-Sébastien Aubin began his career in 1994 in the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League with the Sherbrooke Faucons , where he played two full seasons. After his first year he was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in the third round at position 76. Aubin played a third season in the QMJHL, which he played for a total of three teams.

In 1997 he switched to the professional field and played for the farm teams of the Penguins in the lower-class leagues American Hockey League , International Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League . During the 1998/99 season he came for the first time in the National Hockey League for use and played 17 games. At the beginning of the following season, he prevailed as a goalkeeper and brought convincing performances. During the 2000/01 season he struggled with a few injuries and shared the post as number one with Garth Snow , but showed slight weaknesses and was only the back-up gala of Swede Johan Hedberg for the next two years . Even after Hedberg's departure in the summer of 2003, Aubin was unable to regain the post of regular goalkeeper and shared the place with Marc-André Fleury as a substitute goalkeeper behind Sébastien Caron .

After his contract in Pittsburgh was not renewed and the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled, Aubin received a trial contract with the St. John's Maple Leafs , the AHL farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs . In August 2005 he was finally signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he did not make the jump into the NHL roster and spent most of the season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. In March 2006, Ed Belfour, the first goalkeeper for the Maple Leafs , was injured and Aubin moved up as a substitute goalkeeper behind Mikael Tellqvist in the NHL team. But Tellqvist faltered and Aubin took over the position as number one for the last eleven games of the season and was able to bring a very convincing performance with nine wins.

For the 2006/07 season he was recommended for the NHL team and was number two behind Andrew Raycroft . He was featured 20 times but played a poor season. After a potential goalkeeper, Vesa Toskala, was signed by the Maple Leafs in the summer of 2007 and they wanted to continue to hold onto the younger Raycroft, Aubin's expiring contract was not extended.

It wasn't until the end of August 2007 that Aubin found a new employer in the Los Angeles Kings who gave him a one-year contract. In the first half of the season he formed the goalkeeping team with Jason LaBarbera , but was then removed from the squad for Dan Cloutier . At the end of February 2008, Aubin was finally transferred to the Anaheim Ducks , where he was only allowed to play for their AHL farm team, the Portland Pirates . After his contract expired in the summer of 2008, he was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers .

Europe

In the summer of 2009, Aubin moved to the DEG Metro Stars in the German Ice Hockey League , where the French-Canadian quickly established himself and received a two-year contract extension in December 2009. Despite the early elimination of DEG in the play-off quarter-finals against Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , the right catcher was named the best goalkeeper of the 2009/10 season by the specialist magazine Eishockey News . In his second season at DEG, Aubin was unable to build on his previous season and had to struggle with a relatively sharp drop in performance, which experts including DEG managing director Lance Nethery justified with problems from his active time in North America, as he was already in the NHL was accused of a lack of motivation and work ethic, which would have prevented a longer career in the best league in the world. Aubin himself justified his weaker goalkeeper values, however, with the changed style of play under the new coach Jeff Tomlinson , which was much more offensive than his predecessor Harold Kreis . In the 2011/12 season , the French-Canadian was finally ousted as a regular goalkeeper by the newly signed Bobby Goepfert and only played 16 games for the Rhinelander.

In summer 2012 he switched to the Italian Serie A1 , where he signed with HC Pustertal . After two seasons there, Aubin joined the Ducs d'Angers in the summer of 2013 , for which he played a total of 22 games in the French Ligue Magnus in the 2014/15 season . After he sustained a lengthy injury in the seventh game of the play-off semifinals series against Épinal , which prevented him from preparing for the following season, the Canadian decided to end his playing career.
