Jean Hagen

Jean Hagen (born August 3, 1923 as Jean Shirley Verhagen in Chicago , Illinois , † August 29, 1977 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

She was born as the daughter of Marie and Christian Verhagen. After graduating from Elkhart Highschool, she studied acting and also worked as an usher in the theater. In 1949 she made her film debut on the side of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in the film Marriage War . Her greatest successes later include her role as Doll Conovan in Asphalt Jungle and her comedic portrayal as Lina Lamont alongside Gene Kelly in You Shall Be My Lucky Star , for which she was nominated for an Oscar in 1952 .

From 1947 to 1965 Hagen was married to the actor Tom Seidel. In 1965 he divorced her and got custody of their two children, a daughter (* 1950) and a son (1952–2012). In 1968 she fell into a coma due to alcohol poisoning . After that, she got over her alcohol addiction . In the last two years of her life, the artist was mainly seen in television productions. She died of esophageal cancer from which she suffered for several years.
