Jean Muller
Jean M. Muller (born May 25, 1925 in Levallois-Perret , † March 17, 2005 in Paris ) was a French bridge engineer .
Life
Muller studied at the engineering school Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures and graduated there in 1947. He then worked for the STUP ( Société Technique pour l'Utilisation de la Précontrainte ; roughly: Technical Society for the .), Headed by Eugène Freyssinet , the inventor of prestressed concrete Use of prestressed concrete), where he learned about new techniques of concrete construction and more efficient ways to connect bridge parts.
In 1951 Muller went to the Freyssinet Company , the New York branch of STUP, as chief engineer , where he accompanied important construction projects, including the construction of three prestressed concrete bridges along the motorway from La Guaira to Caracas in Venezuela . He was involved in the design of the bridge over Garrison Dam on the Missouri River . In 1954 he contributed to the construction of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana , where the mass production of prefabricated bridge parts and their assembly was realized for the first time in a very large bridge project. During this time he built the small, single-span Shelton Bridge in the New York area. For reasons of transport, he divided the concrete beams into three prefabricated segments, which were manufactured using the contact method for the first time and prestressed with tendons during installation .
In 1955 he returned to Paris to work for Campenon Bernard . There he was involved in the planning and construction of large prestressed concrete structures such as dams, nuclear power plants and pressure-shell containers for ships. In 1962 he designed the Pont de Choisy road bridge , which crosses the Seine in Choisy-le-Roi near Paris . Muller used there for the first time hollow box - precast segments , which produced by the contact method and the cantilever were fitted, the segments not with mortar , but with fast-curing epoxy resin were bonded. This process had clear economic advantages over conventional manufacturing methods.
With the structural engineer Eugene Figg , he founded the company Figg and Muller Engineers in Tallahassee in 1978 in order to u. a. Design and build the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Grandfather Mountain . Muller was technical director there until 1987. In 1987 he founded his own company, J. Muller International, with offices in the United States, France and Thailand . In 2000 he retired from professional life.
