D'Eaubonne, who in his four decades spanning work for French cinema had set the scene for an abundance of classic films, received training as a sculptor and painter. He earned his first income as a painter of advertising posters. His teacher Lazare Meerson , himself an important film architect, brought him to film at the end of the 1920s ; conversely, he later became the teacher of Raymond Gabutti . One of his early important works was Jean Cocteau's The Blood of a Poet .
Since the late 1930s, d'Eaubonne has been involved in an abundance of high-quality productions, staged by directors such as Jacques Feyder , Ludwig Berger , Kurt Bernhardt and most recently, before the Germans invaded France, Max Ophüls for the first time . In 1940 Jean d'Eaubonne fled to Switzerland and stayed there until the end of the war in 1945. Back in Paris, d'Eaubonne's most important period followed in the first half of the 1950s, when he designed the buildings for Ophüls' last top productions. His designs for the "four masterpieces Der Reigen , Pläsier , Madame de ... and Lola Montez are archetypal, pioneering decorations of timeless, stylish elegance and classic beauty."
Other important post-war works designed by d'Eaubonne are Jean Cocteau's Orpheus film from 1949 and Jacques Becker's Belle Epoque half-world story Goldhelm from 1951. In the 1960s, the Frenchman also designed the sets for several locally made, mostly high- profile US productions like Stanley Donen's crime thriller Charade , Richard Quine's comedy Together in Paris and Peter Ustinov's production Lady L - films "for which he conceived Parisian flair as if from a picture book."
