The Jeditz Bridge is a road and pedestrian bridge in the Brandenburg town of Rathenow . Since the Middle Ages, it has been the northern exit of the city from Rathenower's old town island over the Rathenower city canal, an arm of the Havel .

history

The bridge was operated as a wooden drawbridge until 1885 and as a bascule bridge until 1913. A brick building erected in 1850 originally served as a customs house before it was converted into a residential building for the keeper of the bridge in Jeditz. Remodeling work began in 1912. A reconstruction or new construction of the bridge in Jeditz had been planned for a long time. Instead of the existing bascule bridge, a permanent bridge should be built. However, the project had been postponed by the city. The water engineering authorities, however, pushed for the replacement building and, in the interests of cargo shipping, demanded a new building with a significantly expanded profile and greater clearance height. Ultimately, the decision was made to build a lift bridge. A permanent bridge did not seem feasible due to the height of the street level, the traffic and the dense development on each street. The renovation work began in 1912. The completion had to be postponed further and further because the apparently not fully developed construction of the lifting mechanism did not work. In January 1913, the bridge was provisionally released for carriage traffic. There were always disturbances. In June 1914, a sprocket broke and one of the counterweights crashed. Defective components were replaced. With further attempts a lifting chain broke and the bridge fell into its lying area. A proper repair could only be carried out after the end of the First World War , as the nickel steel required for the manufacture of the spare parts was not available. However, the Jeditz Bridge remained a critical point in the traffic in the city of Rathenow. After a few years of working quite well, there was another accident in 1924 when a link on a lifting chain broke and the bridge got into a tilted position.

The bridge was restored in the 1990s, but not the lifting mechanism. A separate pedestrian crossing with steps is part of the bridge in each town.
