Jedidiah "Jeddie" Amoako-Ackah (born April 20, 1991 in Asamankese ) is a Ghanaian- British track cyclist . He is the first track cyclist from Ghana to compete in the Commonwealth Games .

Athletic career

A Ghanaian businessman living in Glasgow gave Jeddie Amoako-Ackah the idea in September 2013 to participate in the 2014 Commonwealth Games for Ghana in track cycling. These took place there in July / August 2014, with the track cycling competitions being held in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome . Amoako-Ackah was the first Ghanaian to compete in the Commonwealth Games in track cycling, a fact that the British media described as "historic".

Amoako-Ackah took a leave of absence from the university to prepare for the Commonwealth Games ; He is financially supported by business people from Glasgow. British track cyclist David Daniell created a training plan for him and former Scottish trainer Ivor Reid acts as his manager. A graphic designer from Glasgow created his own shirt design for him free of charge with graphic elements from Ghana. After three months of training, Jedidiah Amoako-Ackah decided to start in short-term disciplines instead of, as initially planned, in an endurance discipline. He registered for the sprint , keirin and 1000 meter time trial disciplines . He did not compete in the time trial, in the sprint he finished 26th (out of 28), and in the Keirin he was eliminated on the first lap.

In February 2016 Jeddie Amoako-Ackah started at the African Cycling Championships 2016 in Casablanca , which was only possible for him through crowdfunding . He started in the Keirin and finished seventh and last.

Private

Jedidiah Amoako-Ackah was born in Ghana. He grew up in Molepolole , Botswana , where he also started cycling. From there, his family moved to Glasgow in 2001 . Amoako-Ackah studies Sports Therapy at the University of Chichester (as of 2014) and is also active as a judoka and boxer .

Amoako-Ackah's sporting ambitions go beyond a one-off start at the Commonwealth Games . For example, he planned to set up a Ghanaian track cycling team in collaboration with the Ghana Cycling Association by the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . He hopes that his commitment will have a positive impact on the project to build a cycling track in Accra (The Accra Velodrome Project) . He himself set up the Gift-A-Bike Foundation , which equips children with bicycles so that they can go to school.
