Yemen (disambiguation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yemen refers to a landscape in southern Arabia. Due to the division of this area into a northern and a southern part, different states emerged there:

Northern part

  • North Yemen , colloquial only
  • Kingdom of Yemen (1911–1962) in Northern Yemen after independence until the introduction of the republican form of government
  • Yemeni Arab Republic (1962–1990) also known as the Yemen Arab Republic or, colloquially, North Yemen

Southern part

  • South Yemen (1839-1967 British rule), colloquially still in use today
  • South Arab Federation (1962–1967) as an organization of states under British protection from which the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen developed
  • Democratic People's Republic of Yemen (1967 / 70–1990) (until 1970 People's Republic of South Yemen ) colloquially, but historically incorrect, as a relic from the time of British rule (1839–1967), still called South Yemen

Northern and southern part united

  • Republic of Yemen since unification in 1990 (as of August 2016)
  • Democratic Republic of Yemen (May 21 to July 7, 1994), colloquially also South Yemen , short-lived, internationally unrecognized state during the Yemeni civil war of 1994
