The Yenisei Gulf ( Russian Енисейский залив , Jenisseiski Saliw), also Jenisseibucht ( Бухта Енисейский called Buchta Jenisseiski), is in the northwest part of the Krasnoyarsk region and from Siberia and Russia ( Asia ) situated Gulf of Kara Sea ( Arctic Ocean ) and forms at the same time to about 225 km long estuary of the Russian river Yenisei .

Geographical location

The Yenisei Gulf stretches as a natural border between the North Siberian Lowlands in the east and the West Siberian Lowlands in the southwest and south between the large Taimyr Peninsula , which extends northeast with the Byrranga Mountains , which are far from the Gulf , and the much smaller Gydan Peninsula , which extends with the Juribei hills and Gydan is located southwest. In particular, it absorbs the Yenisei stream coming from the south, whose water flows through the Gulf northwest into the Kara Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean. The transition from Yenisei to the Gulf ( ) is located between the northern Cape Sopotschnaja-Karga the east of it leading into the Yenisei rivers Sopotschnaja and Chaika and southern Cape Oschmarina and westerly of this chapter Narsoi -Mündung. Much farther to the northwest is located at the junction of the Gulf to the actual Kara large Sibiryakov Island and the southwest in the neighboring autonomous district of Yamal-Nenets the mainland close and even large Oleniinsel that it located to the other side Gydanbucht than estuary of Gydan leads over.

The gulf is connected to the Kara Sea by two straits : The one to the southwest of the Sibiryakov Island is at least about 30 km wide, leading to the Gydan Peninsula and Oleni Island via the Owzyna Strait , which leads northwest into the Kara Sea with the Neupokojewa Island there and east of Siberyakov Island is a strait known as Yenisseigolf , at least 35 km wide and leading to the Taimyr Peninsula, which leads north towards Dikson Island with the Dikson community and into the Kara Sea. At the southern transition of the Gulf into these straits, near the northeastern Gulf coast, there are several small islands, including: Krestowski Island , Greater Karsakowski Island and Little Karsakowski Island .

The last and at the same time northernmost Yenisei tributary before its transition into the Yenisei gulf is the Sopotschnaja , which flows 3 km east of this transition, on the other hand the aforementioned Narsoi , which flows from the south, is the first Gulf tributary beyond the transition. In addition to the Yenisei, which ultimately flows from the south-east, also Pajolawajacha , Jekarjaujacha and Mongotschejacha ( Sosnowaja ) in the south and southwest as well as Saricha , Glubokaja , Syrjanka , Rogosinka , Krestjanka , Jefremowa , flow into the Gulf, its small side bays or into the straits . Lemberowa roughly in the east and northeast.

The sea golf is about 225 km long, at the influence of the Yenisei in the gulf about 12 km and at the transition to the Kara Sea a maximum of 150 km wide. Shortly after the Yenisei crosses into the Gulf, the water is about 26 m deep; further upstream, near the mouth of the Goltschicha, the Yenisei reaches a depth of around 42 m. The gulf is about 30 m deep to the southeast of the Siberyakov Island and a maximum of about 33 m deep to the northeast of this island at the transition to the Kara Sea. The coastal hills near the south coast of the gulf are a maximum of 87  m high southwest of the Narsoi estuary and those near its northeast coast reach a height of up to 229  m north of the Krestjanka estuary ; the hills of the Sibiryakov Island are a maximum of 33  m and those of the Oleniinsel up to 13  m high.

Localities

The mainland coasts and islands in the area of the Yenisei Gulf are largely uninhabited, but in the region in summer fishermen in particular live in huts in some places. In addition, in the far north, at the transition from the eastern strait leading from the Gulf to the Kara Sea , there is the municipality of Dikson , located on both the island of Dikson and on the mainland Taimyr Peninsula, and on the west coast of the Gulf, where the Owzyna Strait begins the coast is the polar station Leskino  ( ) and at the Sosnovaya estuary a little west-northwest of it the former settlement of Sosnovaya .

Fauna, climate and ice

In the hinterland of the vegetation-free and in some places rugged coasts of the Yenisei Gulf, tundra with mosses and lichens predominate, with frost rubble deserts reaching as far as the beaches. The winters are long and extremely cold, the summers short and cold. Most of the year the Gulf is covered by ice , although the shipping routes are kept clear by icebreakers , only during three summer months it remains ice-free. When ice and snow melt in summer , the Yenisei often drives strong floods into the Gulf.
