Jerome Charyn (born May 13, 1937 in New York City ) is an American writer.

Life

His parents were Jewish immigrants, he first learned Yiddish and soaked up the atmosphere of New York City, which later provided the material basis for almost all of his books.

In 1957 he graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in history and comparative literature. From 1995 to 2010 he taught film studies at the American University of Paris , before turning his back on Europe again.

Charyn has published around 37 books, mostly crime novels . One of the recurring characters is the fictional policeman Isaac Sidel . According to Charyn, this was not based on reading experience, but on close observation of his brother's professional colleagues, who was a homicide detective in the 1970s. When designing the character, however, the author has given himself great freedom, adheres to "no conventions and restrictions" of the crime genre, so that a proximity to the comic hero Dick Tracy is noticeable. Charyn says, "New York is a comic book city."

Two autobiographical works about his childhood and youth in the Bronx were named Book of the Year by the New York Times . For his novel Darlin 'Bill he received the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters . Crime of the year 2008 (6th place) he was in the KrimiWelt best list with Citizen Sidel .

The writer lives and works in southern Manhattan .
