Jerry Barrett (1860)

Jerry Barrett ( 1824 - January 21, 1906 ) was a British painter of the Victorian era . His best known work is a depiction of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War called "The Mission of Mercy: Nightingale receiving the wounded at Scutari" .

Work

Barrets' best known work is a depiction dealing with the Crimean War , called "The Mission of Mercy: Nightingale receiving the wounded at Scutari" (1858). The painting, which shows Florence Nightingale taking care of the wounded in Scutari , is in the National Portrait Gallery (London) , paired with the painting "Queen Victoria's First Visit to her Wounded Soldiers" . Both works were exhibited and published in print in 1858, when the patriotic mood was still intense after the Crimean War. Barrett was praised for choosing unusual aspects of modern warfare and depicting an abundance of details and portraits from life. The prints found widespread distribution, but the paintings themselves disappeared into a private collection in 1859 and did not reappear until 1993 when they were acquired at auction by the National Portrait Gallery.

There are records that suggest that Barrett traveled to the Crimea to make sketches for his paintings. "Queen Victoria's First Visit to Her Wounded Soldiers" was exhibited in May 1856 at the Royal Exhibition Gallery in Piccadilly. Thomas Agnew acquired "The Mission of Mercy" in August 1857 and exhibited it in the summer of 1858 at the Leggatt and Hayward Gallery in Cornhill.
