Gerald Stenhouse Jemmott (born March 22, 1946 in Bronx , New York City ) is an American electric bassist . Jemmott was one of the leading session bassists of the late 1960s and early 1970s, working with soul , blues , and jazz musicians known to many of the time .

He was cited as a major influence by bassist Jaco Pastorius , who incorporated Jemmott's funk bass lines into his own style.

Career

Jemmott, who won two Grammy Awards as a bassist, started playing acoustic bass at the age of ten when he discovered Paul Chambers . After switching to bass guitar, he was discovered by saxophonist King Curtis in 1966 . With his connection to Atlantic Records through Curtis , he began making recordings with other label artists, including Aretha Franklin , Ray Charles , Wilson Pickett and the Rascals , Roberta Flack and Margie Joseph . He also recorded with BB King , Freddie King , Chuck Berry , Duane Allman , Otis Rush , Champion Jack Dupree , Mike Bloomfield , accompanying Herbie Hancock , Freddie Hubbard , Erroll Garner , Les McCann , Eddie Harris , Houston Person , George Benson , Archie Shepp , Lionel Hampton , Herbie Mann , Eddie Palmieri and Charles Earland . He played the bass lines for Mr. Bojangles and BB King's The Thrill Is Gone .

Jemmott hosted the Pastorius instructional video Modern Electric Bass in 1985 .

After a near fatal car accident in 1972, in which the singer Roberta Flack and the guitarist Cornell Dupree were involved, he had to pause his bass playing until 1975 due to the injuries. In the meantime, the order book as session musicians had declined due to home recording studios. Therefore, he now worked in film and theater as arranger and conductor for John Williams and The Boston Pops .

In 1978 Jemmott began his solo career playing jazz, blues, R&B, reggae and soul as Jerry Jemmott & Souler Energy , which over the years has included Steve Berrios , Eric Gale , Neal Creque , Lou Marini and Kirk Nurock , as well as Seldon Powell , Bernard Purdie and Melvin Sparks . He later founded Jerry Jemmott's The Right Reverend Jakie Neckbone Jubilee Special and played a mix of his original Cool Groove songs as well as his Soul Kitchen improvisation workshops with his classic hits . Among the members was singer Catherine Russell .

During this time he was also a member of the Jimmy Owens Quartet, who made several trips to Europe, the Middle East and Africa for the US State Department, along with Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Fortune .

Jemmott has also written articles and books, and published audio and video bass teaching materials. He received the 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player magazine and is director of the bass division for the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists .

In 2009 he moved to Gregg Allman's backing band ("Gregg Allman & Friends") alongside the Cornell Duprees Soul Survivors.
