Jerzy Pilch (2008)

Jerzy Pilch (born August 10, 1952 in Wisła , † May 29, 2020 in Kielce ) was a Polish writer .

Life

Pilch studied Polish at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow . He then worked from 1989 to 1999 as an editor for the well-known liberal-Catholic weekly newspaper Tygodnik Powszechny . From then on he was a freelance writer and, until 2006, a columnist for the weekly Polityka . He then moved to the daily Dziennik (Axel Springer Polska) in the same position .

As early as 1989 he received the Kościelski Prize , which was donated by exiled Poles and awarded mainly to younger authors . In 2001 he was awarded the most prestigious Polish literary prize, Nike . In his precisely described, linguistically elaborated works, aspects of the comedy, the exaggeration and the grotesque are not missing, not least in the description of his homeland, the Cieszyn Silesia and the Protestant minority milieu (the city of Wisła itself is the only city in Poland with a Protestant majority), to which he also belonged.
