Jesper Grønkjær [ ˈjɛspɐ ˈɡʁɶnkjæɐ̯ˀ ] (born August 12, 1977 in Nuuk , Greenland ) is a former Danish football player .

Club career

Grønkjær played in Denmark for Aalborg BK . From 1998 to 2000 he played in the Dutch honor division at Ajax Amsterdam . In 2000 he moved to the Premier League for Chelsea , 2004 for league rivals Birmingham City and from there to Atlético Madrid in the Spanish Primera División . In the 2005/06 season Grønkjær played at VfB Stuttgart in the 1st Bundesliga . He ended his contract, which ran until 2008, prematurely after a year and last played for FC Copenhagen .

On May 26, 2011, he ended his career as a professional soccer player.

National team

With the Danish national football team , he took part in the European Football Championship 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium, where they were eliminated after the group stage. Two years later he also took part in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where they finished first in the group ahead of Senegal , Uruguay and France and reached the second round. He also participated in the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal with the Danish selection and reached the quarter-finals.

Six years later he took part with Denmark in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they were eliminated after the preliminary round. After leaving, he announced his resignation from the national team.

He has played 80 international matches since his debut on March 27, 1999 in a 2-1 defeat by Italy , in which he scored five goals.
