Jesse Valdez

Jesse Valdez (born December 7, 1947 in Houston , Texas ) is a retired American boxer of Mexican descent. Valdez was a bronze medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games .

Career

At the age of 16 Valdez won the national welterweight championship for the first time in 1964 (-67 kg). In the same year he also reached the finals of the US American selection tournament for the 1964 Olympic Games . However, he lost this to Maurice Frilot.

After these initial successes, Valdez went to the United States Air Force and had little time for his boxing career. It was not until 1967 that he was able to take part in the Pan American Games in Winnipeg , where he won a bronze medal. He lost in the semifinals to Mario Guilloti , Argentina . At the Golden Gloves in the same year he won the gold medal and at the national championships the following year the silver medal.

1970 Valdez won the light middleweight (-71 kg) American championship and the following year the military world championships in Rotterdam . In 1972 Valdez won the Golden Gloves and in the US selection tournament for the Olympic Games in 1972 he prevailed against Eddie Gregory in the welterweight division and was able to start at the Games in Munich . After victories over Kolman Kalipe, Togo (5: 0), Carlos Burga, Peru (4: 1), David Jackson, Uganda (4: 1), and Anatoli Khohlow, Soviet Union (5: 0), he reached the semi-finals, but which he lost to the later Olympic champion Emilio Correa Vaillant , Cuba (3-2), and thus won the Olympic bronze medal.

After this success, Valdez ended his boxing career after 231 wins and 13 losses and became a professional soldier in the Air Force.
