Jesse Ventura (2016)

Jesse Ventura (* 15. July 1951 as James George Janos in Minneapolis ) is an American wrestler , actor and radio host . From 1999 to 2003 he was the 38th governor of the US state of Minnesota .

Life

He was born to Bernice Martha (née Lenz) and George William Janos. Both parents served in World War II . The parents were of Slovak or German descent. He grew up in Minneapolis.

US Navy

From December 1, 1969 to September 10, 1975 he served in the United States Navy , the last two years as a reservist . He was a member of a combat swimmer unit specializing in underwater blasting. Contrary to popular claims, however, he was not a Navy Seal in the strictest sense because he did not complete this training. What is correct, however, is that he was listed in a seal team while he was on reserve.

Wrestling career

Janos began his wrestling career in October 1975 at the age of 24. He copied his ring character, with feather boa , earrings, various beard styles and, above all, extravagant clothing, almost completely from his great role model, superstar Billy Graham . In the mid-1980s he had to end his active career for health reasons. He himself claims that these resulted from Agent Orange's deployment during the Vietnam War . He then moved to the commentary desk and with Gorilla Monsoon became part of one of the most famous commentary teams in wrestling. In 2004, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his son Tyrel .

Acting

In 1987 he played alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the very successful action film Predator . His saying I ain't got time to bleed (Eng .: “I have no time to bleed”) was a popular film quote and later the title of his autobiography. This was followed by eight further appearances in feature films (including Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger).

Political career

From 1991 to 1995 he served as the mayor of Brooklyn Park , Minnesota.

In the 1998 election for governor of Minnesota, Ventura ran as a candidate for the Reform Party of Minnesota . He later joined the Independence Party of Minnesota after it broke off from the Reform Party of the United States of America . He narrowly won the election against the major party candidates, Republican Norm Coleman (Mayor of St. Paul ) and Attorney General Hubert H. "Skip" Humphrey III ( Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party ).

During the election campaign he used the slogan “Don't vote for politics as usual”, and he was also one of the first politicians to use the Internet for campaigning.

During his tenure, Minnesota's poor economic performance and controversial opinions from Ventura led to a significant decline in his popularity ratings . He justified the decision not to run for re-election in 2003 with the excessive media interest in his family's private life.

TV career

On December 2, 2009, the reality show Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura started on the US TV channel TruTV . The series deals with various conspiracy theories, such as the attacks of September 11, 2001 , HAARP or the “ climate lie ”.

Ventura's political show Off the Grid has been running on the on-demand channel Ora Tv since 2014 .
