Jiří Bubla (born January 27, 1950 in Ústí nad Labem , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player who played for the CHZ Litvínov , the Czechoslovak national team and the Vancouver Canucks on the position of defender for many years . His son Jiří Šlégr is also a hockey player and played for several years in the NHL .

Career

Jiří Bubla began his career at CHZ Litvínov in 1968 before moving to the Dukla Jihlava Army Club in 1969 . He remained loyal to this club until 1979 and won the Czechoslovak championship in 1970 and 1971 . Between 1971 and 1979 he played again for Litvínov. Then he moved to HC Sparta Prague . In total, Bubla scored 93 goals in 470 games in the Czechoslovak 1st division . Before the 1981/82 season, a special NHL draft for Czechoslovak players was carried out, in which Bubla was selected by the Colorado Rockies . A few weeks later, however, the Rockies gave the NHL rights to Bubla to the Vancouver Canucks , so that he played for the Canucks from the middle of the season. He scored 17 goals and 101 assists in 262 NHL games for the Canucks, ending his career in 1986.

Jiří Bubla had even greater successes than at club level in international championships. With the Czechoslovak men's selection , he won two medals at the Olympic Winter Games and nine medals at world championships . His first appointment to the national team was for the ice hockey world championship in 1971 and from then on he took part in the world championship annually. Five years later he was named to the squad for the 1976 Winter Olympics and won the silver medal. Another Olympic participation followed in 1980 and the 1976 Canada Cup . In the national jersey he scored 37 goals in 230 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

During the Ice Hockey World Championship in Vienna in 1987 , Bubla was arrested and later convicted of heroin smuggling. He spent four years in an Austrian prison. Today Bubla runs a haulage business near Vancouver.
