Jiří Menzel (2007)

Jiří Menzel (born February 23, 1938 in Prague ; † September 5, 2020 there ) was a Czech director and actor . He was one of the main characters in the Czechoslovak Nouvelle Vague , which caused a stir around the world in the 1960s.

Life

Jiří Menzel was born in 1938 as the son of the children's book author Josef Menzel . During his training at the FAMU film school in Prague from 1957 to 1962, he made his first short films Domy z panelů (1960) and Umřel nám pan Foerster (1962). He then worked for the newsreel until 1965. A tour with the theater group “La Madragola” took him in 1967 through Czechoslovakia and other Eastern European countries. Menzel has staged at theaters in Stockholm, Basel and Bochum.

He made his film debut as an actor in 1962 in strop by Věra Chytilová . Since then, Menzel has worked both as an actor and director in cinema and television productions. His 1966 comedy Love According to the Timetable was honored at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival and received an Oscar , and his later film Heimat, sweet home from 1985 was also nominated for an Oscar. Menzel's comedy Rozmarné léto (1968) won a prize at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival .

Menzel often used his compatriot Bohumil Hrabal for literary models ; when he filmed his Larks on a Thread in 1969 , this satirical film was banned after the crackdown on the Prague Spring . It was only shown to an international audience at the Berlinale in 1990 and was awarded the Golden Bear . Menzel was banned from working in film in 1970, turned to the theater and was considered a defining figure on his home stage in the Vinohrady district of Prague .

With Postřižiny (1980), a story from Bohemia from the 1920s, he had great success with the audience. He played several times in Hungarian and German films in the 1970s and 80s, including Gyula Maárs Felhőjáték (1983) and Krzysztof Zanussi's The Long Conversation with the Bird (1990).

In the 1990s, Menzel tried unsuccessfully to film Hrabal's I served the English king . It was not until 2005 that he was able to start filming after the failure of several competing projects (including those of Karel Kachyňa ). The film, with Julia Jentsch and Oldřich Kaiser in the leading roles, premiered in November 2006 and was awarded the Bohemian Lion , the Czech Republic's national film prize , a year later .

Menzel died after a long illness on September 5, 2020 at the age of 82.
