James "Jim" Michael Flaherty (born December 30, 1949 in Montreal , † April 10, 2014 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian politician of the Conservative Party of Canada and finance minister of his home country from 2006 until a few weeks before his death.

Life

After finishing school, Flaherty first studied at Princeton University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a postgraduate degree in law at the Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He then became a partner in the law firm Flaherty Dow Elliott and worked as a lawyer for several years .

Flaherty began his political career in the province of Ontario ; he was elected in 1995 as a candidate of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario , in which he represented the constituency of Whitby-Ajax for ten years until 2005 . Prime Minister Mike Harris named him provincial minister of labor in 1997, and then served as Attorney General from 1999 to 2001 . Most recently, Flaherty was from 2001 until the end of Harris' term in April 2002, his deputy as Deputy Prime Minister and at the same time Treasury Secretary of Ontario. In the government of Ernie Eves , successor to Harris, he was Minister for Enterprise, Opportunities and Innovation from April 2002 to October 2003.

In the election of January 23, 2006 Flaherty was elected as a candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada for the first time in the Canadian House of Commons and has since represented the constituency of Whitby-Oshawa . Shortly after the election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him to his cabinet as Treasury Secretary on February 6, 2006 .

Jim Flaherty was married to Christine Elliott Flaherty, who is a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly. He died in his apartment in Ottawa a month after his resignation in 2014 and was buried a few days later with a state funeral in Toronto's St. James Cathedral .
