Jim Valvano

James Thomas Anthony Valvano (born March 10, 1946 in Queens , New York , † April 28, 1993 in Durham , North Carolina ), called Jimmy V , was an American basketball coach . He is best known for his time as a coach at North Carolina State University , with which he won the NCAA championship in 1983 .

career

After studying at Rutgers University (1964-67) Valvano was a trainer at Johns Hopkins University . Thanks to him, the team managed the first season in 24 years with a positive balance. From 1972 to 1975 Valvano was a trainer at Bucknell University , and from 1975 to 1980 at Iona College . He then moved to North Carolina State.

In the 1983 finals the team suggested as rank outsiders the Cougars of the University of Houston to Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler . The dunk by Lorenzo Charles shortly before the end of the game to the 54:52 final score is one of the most famous and most symbolic moments in the history of the NCAA basketball championship.

In 1990 Valvano switched to the sports broadcaster ESPN as a commentator and worked there until shortly before his death. After a ten month battle with cancer , Valvano died at the age of 47. He was considered one of college basketball's most talented coaches. Shortly before his death, Valvano founded the “Jimmy V” foundation for the benefit of cancer research with the support of ESPN.
