João Semedo

João Pedro Furtado da Cunha Semedo (born June 20, 1951 in Lisbon - † July 17, 2018 ) was a Portuguese doctor and politician of the Bloco de Esquerda .

Before Semedo became a member of the Bloco de Esquerda, he was from 1991 to 1995 for the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) in the Portuguese parliament, the Assembleia da República . After studying medicine, Semedo moved to Porto and won all of his mandates for the Assembleia da República in that district . In the 2005 election he succeeded in re-entering the Portuguese parliament. After moving back to the Assembleia da República in 2009 and 2011, he resigned his mandate in 2015 due to illness.

From November 11, 2012 to 2014, Semedo was chairman of the Bloco de Esquerda together with Catarina Martins , as his predecessor Francisco Louçã was no longer running. Martins has been the sole chairwoman since 2014.

In addition, Semedo gave commentary for the Portuguese television station SIC Notícias .
