Joël Bouzou (born October 30, 1955 in Figeac ) is a former French modern pentathlon . Today he works as a functionary .

Career

Bouzou took part in four Olympic Games : 1980 in Moscow , 1984 in Los Angeles , 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona . In 1980 he finished 20th in the individual and was fifth with the team. Things went better in 1984 when he improved to 17th place in the individual and won the bronze medal with the team. In addition to Bouzou, Paul Four and Didier Boubé also belonged to the team. In 1988 he achieved his best result in individual with eighth place, while he narrowly missed another medal win with the team with fourth place. In his last games in 1992 he was 17th in the individual again, in the last team competition it was seventh.

He won four medals at world championships . In 1982 he secured his first podium finish in singles with bronze. He also won bronze with the team in 1983 and 1986 . In 1987 he became individual world champion.

After his active sports career, he held various official posts . He was general secretary of the world association Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne for 15 years and now sits on its board as vice-president. Bouzou is a board member of the World Olympians Association and the founder and president of the Peace and Sport initiative , which aims to create dialogue through sport.

Bouzou holds a degree in Sports Law and Economics from the University of Limoges . He is an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite and was accepted into the Legion of Honor .
