Joachim Alexander Koops

Joachim Alexander Koops (* 1981 ) is a German political scientist .

Life

He earned a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University , an MSc in European Politics, Economics and Law from Turku University and a PhD in Political Science from Kiel University . From 2009 he taught European and International Politics at the Vesalius College of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as a professor . At the same time, he worked as a consultant, including for the commander of the UN intervention force SHIRBRIG . In 2014 Koops was appointed Dean of Vesalius College. Since 2019 he has held the Chair of Security Studies and Scientific Director (WD) of the Institute for Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) on the campus of Leiden University in The Hague.

His main research interests are global security governance and the foreign and security policy of the European Union, the role of the United Nations, the European Union, NATO (and their inter-organizational relationships) in peace and security as well as crisis management and peacekeeping.
