Joachim Mössner

Joachim Mössner (born November 17, 1950 in Würzburg ) is a retired German internist and university professor.

Career

From 1970 to 1976 he studied human medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, followed by his doctorate and license to practice medicine in 1978. From 1978 to 1982 Mössner worked as a research assistant at the University Medical Center in Würzburg.

From 1983 to 1985 Mössner was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation in San Francisco as part of pancreatic receptor research in the laboratory of John A. Williams, pancreas physiologist at the University of California. In 1987 he completed his habilitation and received the venia legendi from the University of Würzburg. From 1989 to 1992 he was a professor at the University of Würzburg. In 1993 he followed the call of the University of Leipzig, where he accepted the chair for internal medicine with a focus on gastroenterology. In Leipzig, he tied numerous research projects and professors to the medical faculty and expanded the science location Leipzig, from 1996 to 1997 as vice dean and from 1997 to 2002 as dean.

Awards and memberships

In 1999 Mössner was one of the youngest presidents in his field at the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases. In the same year he became a member of the National Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . His work on genetic risk factors received international attention. This was followed by honorary memberships of the Polish Society for Gastroenterology in 2002, the Czech Society for Gastroenterology since 2005, Honorary Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP hon.) Since 2012 and honorary membership of the Central German Society for Gastroenterology (MGG).

Since March 10, 2006 he has been a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig. On January 1, 2016, he was appointed Vice President. He is also a member of the European Pancreatic Club (EPC) and the International Association of Pancreatology. Mösner has been a member of the Presidium of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) since 2018.

In 1985 Mössner was awarded the Konstanz Medical Advancement Award, followed in 1988 by the award for clinical gastroenterology - Martin Gülzow.

In 2017 his life's work was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the European Pancreas Society. In 2018, Mössner received the Ernst von Bergmann plaque from the German Medical Association for his commitment to continuing education and training for the medical profession.

Research priorities

Mössner works intensively on the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic and biliary carcinoma as well as interventional endoscopy.

Until his retirement in 2018, Mössner headed the Clinic and Polyclinic for Gastroenterology and Rheumatologist, Department for Internal Medicine, Neurology and Dermatology at the Leipzig University Hospital.
