Joan Clos i Matheu (born June 29, 1949 in Parets del Vallès ) is a Catalan politician. He was Mayor of Barcelona from 1997 to 2006 and Minister of Industry in the Zapatero I cabinet from 2006 to 2008 . He is a member of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC), the Catalan sister party of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE).

Political career

Clos studied medicine at the University of Barcelona . In 1979 he was appointed Director of the Health Authority in the Barcelona City Council. In the local elections in 1983 he was elected to the City Council on the list of Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya, in 1987 as a candidate for the Ciutat Vella district . In 1991 he was appointed second deputy mayor with responsibility for economics, organization and the environment. After the resignation of his predecessor Pasqual Maragall , he became mayor on September 26, 1997 and was confirmed in this office in the 1999 and 2003 elections. He resigned on September 8, 2006 and was sworn in as Spanish Minister of Industry the following day.

In 2010 he succeeded Anna Tibaijuka as Managing Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Nairobi . This activity ended in 2017, followed by Maimunah Mohd Sharif .

Politics as mayor

While his predecessor Maragall hosted the Summer Olympics in 1992 , was the first in Barcelona taught Clos' tenure Forum of Cultures in 2004 from. The forum came under fire for its strong commercial orientation and did not reach the expected number of five million visitors.

During the course of the forum, the rehabilitation of the Besós and Diagonal Mar districts in the east of the city began.

The plan to run the planned express train route ( AVE ) to Madrid underground to the city center was criticized because of the feared effects on the buildings.
