Joan Hickson

Joan Hickson OBE (born August 5, 1906 in Kingsthorpe , Northampton , England , † October 17, 1998 in Wivenhoe , Colchester , England) was a British actress .

life and work

After making her film debut in 1934, Joan Hickson played supporting roles in many well-known and important films of the 1950s in England, including Captain Seasick and The Irresistible with Alec Guinness, and ultimately made a name for herself as a great comedian. She also appeared in seven films by Gerald Thomas , including five from the Carry on ... series , previously in the first three films in the Doctoral series by his brother Ralph Thomas . As early as 1957 she played in the film Carry on Admiral , to which this series owes its name. She has made well over 100 appearances in feature films and television series.

She became known for her portrayal of Miss Marple . Already in the 1940s had Agatha Christie saw her in a play and wrote her: "I hope I that you play one day my Miss Marple." In 1961 she appeared in a supporting role as caregiver , Mrs. Kidder in the film 16:50 from Paddington next Margaret Rutherford up. Between 1984 and 1992 the BBC produced a total of twelve Miss Marple films with her, which were shown in the third programs in Germany and are therefore less known in this country.

In 1987 Hickson was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
