Joan Martorell i Montells (* 1833 in Barcelona ; † July 5, 1906 in Barcelona) was a Catalan builder and architect . He was an uncle of the architect Bernardí Martorell i Puig .

Life

Martorell received his title as an architect in 1876 and is part of the first graduate class of the Escola de Arquitectura de Barcelona (German: Architecture School of Barcelona). His architectural language can be assigned to late historicism , especially the neo-Gothic style, which was very popular in Catalonia at the time , with strong influences from the ideas of Viollet-le-Duc . But he is already considered an important pioneer of modernism - after all, the two most important representatives of modernism, Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner , were already employees in his office as students.

Through Martorell, Gaudí made important contacts with later clients, such as B. the Marquis of Comillas. It was also Martorell who recommended the young Gaudí to continue the work as the test architect of the Sagrada Família in 1883 after the original architect of the church, Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano , had gone into dispute.

In 1882 Martorell published a widely acclaimed alternative design for the facade of Barcelona Cathedral , which, however, was never carried out. The drawings were made by Gaudí and Domènech.

Martorell was one of the initiators of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc ("Artistic Circle of Saint Luke"), as well as founder and first president of the Círculo Barcelonés de San José Obrero ("Barcelona Circle of Saint Joseph the Worker").
