Joan Micklin Silver

Joan Micklin Silver (born May 24, 1935 in Omaha , Nebraska , † December 31, 2020 in New York City , New York ) was an American film director and screenwriter .

Life

Joan Micklin Silver was born to Jewish Russians and grew up in Omaha. She studied (music and literature) at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and graduated in 1956. A short time later she married Rabbi Raphael D. Silver. They moved to Cleveland together and had three daughters.

There she worked as a music teacher for children with behavioral disorders. She came across film with the production of educational films on behalf of the Encyclopedia Britannica . With her first feature film " Hester Street ", the story of an Orthodox Jew who follows her husband from Russia to New York and encounters a completely alien world, Silver had a great success. With “Between the Lines” she was able to build on the successful debut; the later films were less well received by critics and audiences.

For the film Between the Lines she won the Interfilm Award - Otto Dibelius Prize at the 1977 Berlinale and won the Berliner Morgenpost readers' award .

Silver died on New Year's Eve 2020 at the age of 85 in her Manhattan home in New York City of complications from an illness of vascular dementia .
