Joannis Avramidis ( Greek Ιωάννης Αβραμίδης ; born September 23, 1922 in Batumi , Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ; † January 16, 2016 in Vienna ) was a contemporary Greek - Austrian sculptor .

life and work

Joannis Avramidis was born as the son of Pontic Greeks in Batumi (USSR). The persecution and the death of his father in prison forced the family to emigrate to Greece in 1939 . Joannis Avramidis had to drop out of his studies at the Art Academy in Batumi, which he started in 1937. In 1943 Avramidis came to Vienna as a foreign worker, studied painting from 1945 to 1949 at the local academy and from 1953 to 1956 sculpture with Robin Christian Andersen and Fritz Wotruba .

He was a well-known artist as early as the late 1950s, creating abstract figures derived from the human body. He represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 1962. In 1965/66 he taught at the Vienna Academy , where he was professor from 1968 to 1992. The art theorist Heimo Kuchling was a close collaborator . 1966/67 he worked as a professor in Hamburg. Reinhard Puch and Wolfgang Götzinger were among his students .

Avramidis was married to the sculptor and poet Annemarie Avramidis (1939-2013).
