Joe's violin is an American documentary - short film of Kahane Cooperman from the year 2016. It is about a Polish Holocaust survivor who donates his violin, and by a twelve year old girl from the Bronx who gets the violin. The film was first shown on April 14, 2016 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival . It was nominated at the 89th Academy Awards 2017 in the category “ Best Documentary Short Film ”.

action

The film is about Joseph Feingold, who was born in Poland in 1923. In his musical family he played the violin. After the attack on Poland in 1939, 17-year-old Joseph was sent to a Siberian labor camp, where he spent six and a half years. His mother and one of his brothers died in the concentration camp . After the end of the war, Feingold returned to Poland, but fled to Germany with his father because of the Kielce pogrom in 1946. While he was waiting there in a refugee home for a crossing to the USA, he exchanged a pack of cigarettes for a violin. He later settled in New York , married his wife Regina and worked as an architect.

As he got older, it became more and more difficult for him to play the violin. When he heard about a fundraising campaign for instruments on the radio in 2014, he donated the violin. The donated instruments were distributed to various schools in New York through the Mr Holland's Opus Foundation. Feingold's violin was given to the then twelve-year-old Brianna Perez at the Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls, who has been playing the violin since kindergarten.

background

Director Cooperman came up with the idea for the film after listening to an interview with Joseph Feingold on radio station WQXR after he had donated his violin. Curious to know who would get it, Cooperman began researching the film.

Joe's Violin was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign. A goal of 35,000 US dollars was targeted. In the end, more than 270 supporters raised almost 50,000 US dollars.
