Joe Dassin
Joseph Ira Dassin (born November 5, 1938 in New York City , United States , † August 20, 1980 in Papeete , Tahiti ) was a French chanson singer, composer and writer of American origin.
biography
Joe Dassin came from a Jewish family formerly based in Odessa , whose family name suggests their place of origin. His parents were the cinema director Jules Dassin and the violinist Béatrice Launer. As a child he lived in New York and Los Angeles . Because of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist policies , his father was forced to leave the United States. After a few stays in different places in Europe, the family finally settled in Paris in 1950 .
After graduating from high school and after his parents divorced, Dassin moved back to the United States in 1956, where he enrolled at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . He financed his studies in cultural anthropology through many part-time jobs.
After completing his studies, Dassin moved back to Paris in 1963, where he worked for Radio RTL . A spokesman for a record label suggested that he record a single . In March 1965, Je change un peu de vent was published .
At the beginning of the 1970s , Dassin celebrated his greatest successes, e.g. B. with Les Champs-Élysées as well as the French versions Ma Musique by Rod Stewart's Sailing and L'été indien by Albatros' Africa and L'Amérique (Yellow River by Christie ). I.a. he also sang the songs La fleur aux dents and Ça va pas changer le monde . In Germany he was very successful with his album Septemberwind , which also contains his world-famous song Les Champs-Élysées in German. Other well-known songs in German were: In Versailles in the large garden , Greetings to mom and There are girls so much to dream .
In 1997, the American punk rock band NOFX released a cover version of the song Champs-Élysées on their album So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes .
Dassin died on August 20, 1980 while on vacation in Tahiti, at the age of only 41, of complications from a heart attack . His grave is in Hollywood Forever Cemetery , Hollywood .
